If you are lucky enough to be at the beach, you are lucky enough! Wise words hanging in a beautiful beach house!
Ocean Isle beach is a small seaside town located in Brunswick County, North Carolina, about 210 miles from our home is Charlotte, this journey takes about 3.5 hours to drive, perfect for a weekend getaway (unless the weekend forms part of a long weekend, then you drive for much longer). This is just amazing for us, as where we are from in South Africa, the closest we were from a “usable” beach was 6.5 hours drive so just to far for a weekend.
Ocean Isle has everything I look for in a beach holiday.
There is a couple of quick food restaurants, where one can enjoy the fresh seafood caught in and around Ocean Isle, one of these restaurants in particular is Sharky’s (do not expect all the items on the menu to be available and the service is not great but you go there for the views, the atmosphere and the location).
There is an ice cream shop called Ocean Isle Creamery, really great ice cream and if you can’t chose, they allow up to two tasters of the many different flavors, just to help you make that final decision. This creamery is also the place where my daughter had her first ice cream, a strawberry ice cream in a waffle cone (a beautiful memory and the start of a messy love for ice cream). There are a couple of surfer shops for incase you forgot that ever needed swim suit or had a flip flop malfunction on one of your strolls on the beach. 5 miles down the road you will find a super market called Lowes (a bit pricey but great experience as they have varieties and just feel so clean and fresh).
Furthermore, Ocean Isle has white sandy beaches as far as the eye can see, the ocean is warm enough to swim in and the waves calm enough most of the times. There is a museum for the rainy days and a putt putt course for the afternoons. Ocean Isle also has a fishing pier (the oldest fishing pier on any Brunswick County Beaches). Ocean Isle is also not too far from department stores like Belk and Macy’s and only a 30min to Myrtle beach, a much bigger, more busy beach.
There are many forms of accommodation to book, you can rent a house, a condo, an apartment or a room at a beach resort, golf resort or hotel. We were lucky enough to stay in a house on the canal with a boat (definite game changer).
A great little escape and the drive home is short enough to keep you in the holiday mood.
